About Dr. Hatton

Robert Hatton was born in 1922, in the city of Lexington, Michigan. He received his BA and MA in Educational Psychology and PhD in Educational Administration from Michigan State University. Dr. Hatton was hired by the Battle Creek Board of Education to be the first Director of the College. Under his leadership the College transitioned from its modest beginnings in GAR Hall to the College's new North Avenue campus. Dr. Hatton resigned in 1962 to accept a position in Oregon as Assistant Superintendant of Public Instruction for Community College.

In 1956, when asked what his views were pertaining to Battle Creek Community College he said, "I feel that Battle Creek has one of the better potentials for community college development in the State of Michigan, with the exception of two or three larger metropolitan areas. The Battle Creek area should provide one of the outstanding community colleges in the State of Michigan. If statistics can be used reliably, a community college with a student enrolment of 1,000 is not beyond the foreseeable future. I am certain that the citizens of Battle Creek will provide adequate facilities for student enrolment as the need is demonstrated."
